Cushions
Round cushions
The zafu (round cushion) is the basic cushion used for meditation within the Zen tradition. We offer two zafu fillings, kapok or buckwheat husks. Kapok-filled zafus are our bestsellers.
Approx. 34 cm diam. x 15 cm deep. Durable cotton canvas, top stitching thread, fabric handle. Kapok zafu approx. 1 kg, buckwheat husk zafu approx. 2.5 kg.

Large kapok support cushions
Support cushions are used in many different ways in meditation and a number of types have been developed to serve different needs. These handmade rectangular kapok-filled cushions are mainly used to add extra height under the zafu, but can also be used as padding to support the knees (useful for creating a stable base if inflexibility prevents you from getting one knee or both knees down to the ground in the cross-legged postures).

Small husk support cushions
Husk-filled small support cushions are another useful member of the support cushion family. These rectangular cushions are simple but provide ideal support for your hands in the dhyani mudra (a hand position often used in meditation where the hands rest in the lap).
Approx. 28 cm x 38 cm. Durable cotton canvas, filled with organic buckwheat husks. Approx. 0.7 kg.

Meditation mats (zabutons)
The zabuton (meditation mat) offers some kindness for your knees and can be used with either cushions or kneeling benches.
Our handmade meditation mats are made by Futonz .
80 x 80 x 7.5cm. Interior: calico cotton interior casing with three layers of cotton batting. Exterior: sturdy cotton canvas cover with zip, machine-washable. Approx. 6 kg.

Seiza Benches
The seiza or kneeling posture is a traditional meditation posture that can be very useful for people with limited flexibility who might struggle with crosslegged postures. The seiza posture can be supported by a cushion or by a seiza bench.
Our seiza benches are custom made in a range of woods (no two benches are quite the same!).
The benches come in three sizes: low, medium and high. You are welcome to try out the different heights at the Auckland Zen Centre before ordering.
